Europe Jazz Media Chart, July 2017

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. Some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice.

Magnus Nygren, Orkester Journalen (Sweden):

Vilhelm Bromanders Initiativ «Allt åt alla» (Signal and Sound Records)

COVER
Cim Meyer, Jazz Special (Denmark):

Beekman «Vol. 2» (Ropeadope)

album in iTunes | playlist on YouTube | album on BandCamp | two tracks on SoundCloud | buy on Amazon | buy on Discogs | album on the artist’s website

Cim Meyer comments:
An international outfit that comes across with many facets but still has a cohesive sound. There is more to it than just a high academic level of musicianship.

COVER
Lars Mossefinn, Dag & Tid (Norway):

Karin Krog «The Many Faces of Karin Krog» (Odin)

buy on Amazon | buy on Discogs

Lars Mossefinn comments:
Karin Krog celebrates her 80th anniversary by releasing this 6 CD-box. Some of these recordings go back to 1967 (with Don Ellis) and the newest is done in February 2017. The box documents that Krog has been a truly original voice in international jazz for 50 years.

EABS «Repetitions (Letters to Krzysztof Komeda)» (Astigmatic Records)

album in iTunes | playlist on YouTube | album trailer on BandCamp | listen on SoundCloud | listen on Deezer (registration required) | listen on Tidal (registration required) | buy on artists’ website

Paweł Brodowski comments:
An intriguing concept album by a septet of young Polish musicians, reimagining Krzysztof Komeda’s compositions from 1962 – 1967, drawn from feature movies and short films, his ballet etudes and music accompanying the poems by great Polish poets. EABS stands for Electro-Acoustic Beat Session.
These innovative interpretations employ contemporary tools, samples, loopes, hip-hop, jungle and funk rhythms. One piece features a guest appearance by violinist Michał Urbaniak, a one-time member of the legendary Komeda Quintet. The album, released on CD and vinyl, includes a comprehensive 40-page booklet in English.

Mike Flynn comments:
I’d like to select a great new album by an emerging four piece from the UK – one of the best albums I’ve heard this year.

COVER
Anna Filipieva, Jazz.Ru (Russia):

The Firebirds «Aladdin’s Dream» (ILK)

album in iTunes | listen on SoundCloud | listen on Yandex.Music | listen on Spotify (registration required) | buy on label’s website

Anna Filipieva comments:
An organ trio from Denmark, originally assembled by the fierce drummer Stefan Pasborg to perform music by Igor Stravinsky (hence the band’s name, after Stravinsky’s famous 1910 ballet score.) On the new album, the Firebirds offer energetic, groovy versions of the themes written by Danish classical composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931.)

COVER
Jan Granlie, Salt Peanuts (Denmark-Norway):

Torhild Ostad / Carsten Dahl «Jeg roper til deg» (NORCD)

album in iTunes | listen on Spotify (registration required) | buy on Discogs | album on the label’s website

COVER
Christine Stephan, Jazzthetik (Germany):

Elliott Sharp / Marc Ribot and Mary Halvorson «Err Guitar» (Intakt)

COVER
Henning Bolte, Jazzism (Netherlands):

Hoera «Beestentijd» (Granvat)

album in iTunes | one track on YouTube | album trailer on BandCamp | album teaser on SoundCloud | album on the label’s website

Henning Bolte comments:
Belgian trio from the inventious Antwerp scene. Bert Cools (g), Stijn Cools (dr) and Dries Laheye (b) create music in between songs and film music, jazz and soundscape. Music of an initimate mood emerging from improvisational elaborations of open compositions. Presented in a unique puzzle box.

Europe Jazz Media Chart, June 2017

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. Some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice.

Cim Meyer, Jazz Special (Denmark):

Verneri Pohjola «Pekka» (Edition Records)

buy in iTunes | trailer on YouTube | album trailer on BandCamp | listen on Yandex.Music | album on the artist’s website | album on the label’s website

Cim Meyer comments:
Solid melodies, modern and personal arrangements and burning trumpet playing – often razor-sharp but at other times with gestures supported by four other excellent musicians. The entire project is saturated with the Finnish spirit of the 1970s caused by the late Pekka Pohjola. Their live act is strongly recommended as well.

Paweł Brodowski comments:
The Atom String Quartet, one of the greatest jazz string quartets in the world, has recorded an album dedicated fully to the music of the legendary violin player Zbigniew Seifert (1946 – 1979) giving his compositions a new spin with their inspired improvisations and refreshing arrangements. A masterpiece.

A superb example of cross-European cooperation at its finest – resulting in a stunning jazz take on this iconic rock album as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

COVER
Anna Filipieva, Jazz.Ru (Russia):

LRK Trio «If You Have A Dream» (Butman Music Records)

trailer on YouTube | listen on Spotify (registration required) | album on the artists’ website

Anna Filipieva comments:
The sophomore release by Moscow-based LRK Trio, which cryptic name is an acronym of the member’s last names: pianist Evgeny Lebedev, bassist Anton Revnyuk, and drummer Ignat Kravtsov. The group managed to somehow avoid the second album syndrome, thinking outside the box of both “jazz piano trio” and “power trio” cliches and never letting the listener to forget that, yes, the trio members grew up with both jazz and Russian classical heritage in their veins, but they remained also a 21st century band with a very modernistic sound.

COVER
Jan Granlie, Salt Peanuts (Norway/Denmark):

Gonçalo Almeida/Rodrigo Amado/Marco Franco «The Attic» (NoBusiness Records)

one track on YouTube | album on BandCamp (CD from Luthuanian label NoBusiness Records) | album on BandCamp (limited release in the trendy compact cassette format from British label Tombed Visions) | buy on Discogs
Jan Granlie comments:
This is a record that draws the story from the “real guys of the 60s” into our time, which then delivers to the degrees. This is a trio that should be booked all around Europe and presented to anyone who has at least a little bit of interest in improvised music. A fantastic and very honest record, with Coltrane and Sanders in the back of the saxophone player’s head. The best so far, this year!

Samuel Rohrer «Range of Regularity» (Arjunamusic)

buy on iTunes | trailer on YouTube | album trailer on BandCamp | one track on SoundCloud

Henning Bolte comments:
It should be clear that Rohrer is not just imitating beat-driven forms of pop music or using it to embellish and pimp up jazz formats. He has developed his very own procedures and aesthetics to create a new form of captivating music that is consequently built from the deeper grounds of rhythm and drumming opening up truly new dimensions. The aesthetics is also found in the remarkable visual design of the album covers of his own Arjuna Music label. The music draws in listeners strongly, into an intense sound world all its own. What you hear will be unfamiliar, attractive, comforting, strange, disconcerting. It might remind the listener of the (re-) sounding world of our blood circulation. It is as mysterious and as fascinating as that.

Paweł Brodowski comments:
Famous Polish singer Anna Maria Jopek’s new album is a collection of haunting pre-WWII Polish tangos performed with a trio of Cuban piano icon Gonzalo Rubalcaba – a bridge between Polish, Cuban, Jewish, Argentinian and American cultures.

The 2CD duo album by pianist Mehldau and singing mandolin player Thile contradicts the theory that one plus one equals two. Instead, it rather states than one plus one equals quite a lot, although ultimately exactly as much as needed to reach the universal harmony.

Anna Filipieva’s notes:
«This live recording was made during the concert set that the Soviet New Jazz legend, saxophonost Anatoly Vapirov, played with Art Ensemble from Arkhangelsk, Russia, led by guitarist Tim Dorofeyev, at the Varna Summer Jazz Festival in Bulgaria, which Vapirov was producing for more than two decades. The sound leaves much to be desired, as it happens with many live recordings, bt the music that was performed that night seemed very appealing to me.»

Anna Filipieva’s notes: «This album, recorded by singer Victoria Kaunova and alto sax player Ilya Morozov, is an outstanding illustration of the idea that, if you want your straigh-ahead jazz to really and consistently boil, it is important to pour in fresh forces regularly… and not to conserve it, by all means!»

Composer, arranger, pianist and bandleader was in his time a figure of equal importance as Krzysztof Komeda. This album, recorded one year before Komeda’s “Astigmatic” and featuring young trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, is an example of his visionary conception that expanded the frontiers of European jazz ».

Forthcoming Summer Jazz Festivals in… Russia!

The new Europe Jazz Media initiative: once every season, our writers recommend forthcoming jazz festivals in their country or region and share their recommendations with the readers of all member media!

June 21-25: USADBA JAZZ ROZA KHUTOR, near Sochi
Usadba Jazz launched in 2004 as a large open-air festival at a beautiful 18th century Arkhangelskoe manor near Moscow. As the festival grew, it kept adding new locations, resulting in a solid chain of several consecutive festivals at beautiful old manors around Russia – this summer, Moscow on June 4, Yekaterinburg on July 2, Voronezh on July 16, and St.Petersburg on July 30, the newest addition being Roza Khutor Ski Resort on June 21-25 in Southern Russia, near the winter Olympic Games site in Sochi. Roza Khutor Ski Resort is not, after all, an old manor, but the Usadba Jazz program at this location is the most extensive among the chain’s 2016 editions, with an eclectic roster of Russian and international jazz, world, and pop artists, a three-day music business forum, and the finals of a multi-stylistic young bands competition, which embraces jazz, fusion, world, and indie.

July 1-3: WHITE NIGHT SWING, St. Petersburg
Now in its 23rd edition, White Night Swing is indeed organized during the height of Russia’s Northern ex-capital’s famous white nights: St.Pete is so far to the north than in late June – early July, it never gets completely dark there. The festival, held at the St. Petersburg State Jazz Philharmonic Hall, reflects the Northern city’s conservative taste in jazz: it’s 100 per cent pure straight-ahead jazz, with healthy excursions into swing, trad, and Dixieland music. The festival’s gala on the open-air stage at the beautiful 18th century-built Arts Square features jazz bands from France (Philippe Duchemin,) Israel (Robert Anchipolovsky,) U.S. (Charles Turner III,) and a variety of excellent local bands, presided by the Jazz Philharmonic Hall’s artistic director, Russian jazz vet and devoted Duke Ellington connoisseur – violinist / vibist / pianist / flugelhornist David Goloschokin.

August 4-7: AQUA JAZZ, Sochi
Launched in 2010 as part of the forthcoming 2014 Winter Olympics cultural program, the festival is still there when the games are over. Organized by a production company run by Russia’s most famous jazz musician, saxophonist Igor Butman (who is also in charge for six other jazz festivals across the country,) Aqua Jazz presents an eclectic roster of artists from the U.S., Europe, and Russia: Richard Bona Mandekan Cubano, Somi, Conrad Herwig, Alex Sipiagin, and several Russian soloists, centered around Butman’s Moscow Jazz Orchestra. The cold country’s only subtropical resort on the Black Sea serves as a nice background which attracts thousands from across Russia, with the festival’s opening New Orleans-themed jazz street parade as the staple of Sochi’s summer season in last seven years.

August 13-14: JAZZ AT THE HERMITAGE GARDEN, Moscow
Historically first open-air jazz festival in Moscow, it is held in a small park in downtown Moscow every August since 1998, rain or shine, and attracts large crowds of both devoted jazz fans of all ages and curious younger audience – as the attendance is free, because of the city’s extensive support. Traditionally, the Hermitage Garden event serves as the Moscow jazz community’s communal gathering, where hundreds of jazz musicians and their fans, some with more than half a century of experience, congregate in the park – even those not scheduled to perform. This year, producer Mikhail “Don Miguel” Green presents a roster of Russians (trumpeter Peter Vostokov‘s Big Jazz Orchestra, groups led by singer Yuliana Rogachova, saxophonist Azat Bayazitov, and others,) Europeans (Austria’s Herwig Gradischnig, his fellow sax man Radovan Tariška from Slovakia) and Americans: singer Sandra Booker, and trumpet virtuoso Alex Sipiagin‘s quintet with special guest saxophonist Will Vinson.

Europe Jazz Media Chart, May 2016

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. From this month on, in an extended version: some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice!
