Europe Jazz Media Chart, May 2018

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. Some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice. In October, 2017, the chart passed the 5th birthday of the initiative, as the inaugural chart was published in October, 2012; the May, 2018 edition is the 68th EJM Chart.

album in iTunes | trailer on YouTube | listen on Yandex.Music | buy on Discogs

Paweł Brodowski comments:
This is the trio’s follow up to their previous collaboration „Komeda Ahead”. An inspired re-interpetation of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, one of the greatest Polish composers of contemporary music. Bassist Marcin Oleś and drummer Bartłomiej Oleś are always ready for experiment, as is their German guest, vibraphonist Christopher Dell. They have worked together successfully for seven years now.

Anna Filipieva, Jazz.Ru (Russia):

Sasha Mashin «Outsidethebox» (Rainy Days Records)

album in iTunes | trailer on YouTube | buy/listen on BandCamp | album in GooglePlay | listen on Yandex.Music

Anna Filipieva comments:
By 41, drummer Sasha Mashin was one of the most internationally exposed Russian jazz instrumentalists. Then he made a tattoo of a wide open box on his arm, decided that he wanted something more than a busy sideman’s life, and came “outside the box” by starting his solo career with this bold statement of an album. It has enough fiery drumming on it, but also a lot of fine modern ensemble playing with the likes of Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, Zhenya Strigalev and Rosario Giuliani on alto sax, plus sixteen other worthy musicians.

COVER
Jan Granlie, Salt Peanuts (Norway-Denmark):

Anthony Braxton «Sextet (Parker) 1993» (New Braxton House Records)

album trailer on BandCamp | buy on Amazon

Jan Granlie comments:
In March, the Tri-Centric Foundation and New Braxton House Records released Braxton’s «Sextet (Parker) 1993» – a violent 11-CDer box with thorough documentation of Braxton’s now legendary European tour that made music composed by and associated with Charlie Parker. One of the most original composers and conceptualists in the jazz in the last fifty years, Anthony Braxton followed his own musical landscape throughout his career – from the 1974 recording “What’s New in the Tradition” to his seven album of tribute to Lennie Tristano, «Quintet (Tristano) 2014». This Charlie Parker project is a centrepiece of the “journey”, a collection of music that recognizes, extends and renews the bebop tradition, where he also re-radicalizes Parker’s musical revolution with a brilliant band that is well versed in the jazz tradition and with very creative music performance: Dutch piano player Misha Mengelberg, trumpeter Paul Smoker, tenor saxophonist Ari Brown from Chicago, bassist Joe Fonda, and drummer Pheeroan akLaff (another Dutch jazz innovator, drummer Han Bennink, replaces akLaff on one CD). One of the best live recordings I have ever heard!

Patrick Sandberg comments:
Four soundtracks from one of Sweden’s absolutely strongest and memorable composers, cornetist and trumpetist Lars Färnlöf (1942-1994,) recorded 1965-1971. Featuring a who’s who of the Swedish jazz scene around the time – Monica Zetterlund, Sabu Martinez, Bernt Rosengren, Bobo Stenson, Palle Danielson and Staffan Abeleen, to name a few. Most of the music is previously unreleased. Comes with 12 page booklet including biography, rare photos and session details.

An almost chamber-musical approach from some excellent musicians. Title track is a clarinet-percussion duo and everything is acoustic and intimate.

Europe Jazz Media Chart, February 2018

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. Some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice. In October, 2017, the chart passed the 5th birthday of the initiative, as the inaugural chart was published in October, 2012; this is the 65th EJM Chart!

Mateusz Smoczyński «Metamorphoses» (Zbigniew Seifert Foundation)

album in iTunes | trailer on YouTube | listen on Yandex.Music | listen on Spotify (registration required) | listen on Deezer (registration required) | buy online from distributor

Paweł Brodowski comments:
An impressive first solo violin outing by Mateusz Smoczyński, a founding member of the now famous Atom String Quartet (and who for a few years was also a pillar of the Turtle Island Quartet) featuring his original compositions with a nod to his guru Zbigniew Seifert, but going beyond jazz into classical music and other genres. Hence the title „Metarmphoses”.

A wonderful album that’s as much folk as it is jazz – but works perfectly in its own sound world with complete integrity and an immersive, understated power – Lauren Kinsella’s voice is spellbinding.

Anna Filipieva, Jazz.Ru (Russia):

Lera Gehner «Look into My Soul» (Bomba Piter)

album in iTunes | album in GooglePlay | listen on Yandex.Music | listen on Spotify (registration required)

Anna Filipieva comments:
The new, high-voltage record from temperamental singer Lera Gehner, who is based in St. Petersburg, provides a hot treatment for cold Russian winter, completed with danceable grooves and spicy horn section work.

Jan Granlie comments:
Anti Rubber Brain Factory is a wonderful collective that takes the legacy of some of the most exciting jazz one step further. A fantastic blend of the best jazz from the 60’s and folk music from North Africa, that fits perfect in the shadow with a glass of something fresh, on a hot day.

Christian Lillingers Grund «C O R» (Plaist-Music)

album in iTunes | trailer on YouTube | album trailer on BandCamp | album on label’s website

Henning Bolte comments:
C O R is the new album of drummer Christian Lillinger’s seven-piece ensemble GRUND – something you should check out every way. It is a striking album bringing advanced music of a very own, no compromise approach with a strong signature. Decidedly conquering new grounds it boldly navigates a diversity of diverging forces and aggregation states – misty, spacey, jolting, hovering, shredding… Layers and textures permeate each other in flowing or fidgeting movements leading into remarkable condensations, expansions as well as stunning transitions. Lillinger’s taut composition grid strongly binds the musical capacities and energies of his six highly profiled fellow musicians and in return sets free those musicians’ astonishing musical fantasy and creativity – as unity a force like a twirling sandstorm. From a deeper ground then a kind of Spreewald Fight Song is resonating through it.

Anni Elif Eğecioğlu have made some really beautiful versions of the Swedish/Finnish poet Edith Södergran and the Swedish poet Karin Boye’s lyrics in her very special way. It’s intense, beautiful and full of passion for the texts from two of the most interesting poets from the Nordic countries from the beginning of 1900. A lot of electronics together with the vocal makes the texts and the music very Anni Eilifs.

It is so much more than just vocalizing and singing. She can switch rapidly between leading and following and always manages to take the audience with her.

Tender lyricism, and impassioned, fiery, powerful playing. This is a stunning ECM debut by the Maciej Obara Quartet, a Polish-Norwegian combination which  includes the leader on alto saxophone, Dominik Wania on piano, Ole Morten Vaagan on bass and  Gard Nilssen on drums. Recorded in Rainbow Studio in Oslo and produced by Manfred Eicher, it features Obara’s original compositions, with the exception of the title ballad, which was penned by Krzysztof Komeda. Next to Tomasz Stanko and Marcin Wasilewski, Maciej Obara is the 3rd Polish jazz leader to have joined the fold of the prestigious and influential label.

Paweł Brodowski comments:
An intriguing concept album by a septet of young Polish musicians, reimagining Krzysztof Komeda’s compositions from 1962 – 1967, drawn from feature movies and short films, his ballet etudes and music accompanying the poems by great Polish poets. EABS stands for Electro-Acoustic Beat Session.
These innovative interpretations employ contemporary tools, samples, loopes, hip-hop, jungle and funk rhythms. One piece features a guest appearance by violinist Michał Urbaniak, a one-time member of the legendary Komeda Quintet. The album, released on CD and vinyl, includes a comprehensive 40-page booklet in English.

An organ trio from Denmark, originally assembled by the fierce drummer Stefan Pasborg to perform music by Igor Stravinsky (hence the band’s name, after Stravinsky’s famous 1910 ballet score.) On the new album, the Firebirds offer energetic, groovy versions of the themes written by Danish classical composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931.)

Belgian trio from the inventious Antwerp scene. Bert Cools (g), Stijn Cools (dr) and Dries Laheye (b) create music in between songs and film music, jazz and soundscape. Music of an initimate mood emerging from improvisational elaborations of open compositions. Presented in a unique puzzle box.

Solid melodies, modern and personal arrangements and burning trumpet playing – often razor-sharp but at other times with gestures supported by four other excellent musicians. The entire project is saturated with the Finnish spirit of the 1970s caused by the late Pekka Pohjola. Their live act is strongly recommended as well.

Anna Filipieva comments:
The sophomore release by Moscow-based LRK Trio, which cryptic name is an acronym of the member’s last names: pianist Evgeny Lebedev, bassist Anton Revnyuk, and drummer Ignat Kravtsov. The group managed to somehow avoid the second album syndrome, thinking outside the box of both “jazz piano trio” and “power trio” cliches and never letting the listener to forget that, yes, the trio members grew up with both jazz and Russian classical heritage in their veins, but they remained also a 21st century band with a very modernistic sound.

Jan Granlie comments:
This is a record that draws the story from the “real guys of the 60s” into our time, which then delivers to the degrees. This is a trio that should be booked all around Europe and presented to anyone who has at least a little bit of interest in improvised music. A fantastic and very honest record, with Coltrane and Sanders in the back of the saxophone player’s head. The best so far, this year!

Samuel Rohrer «Range of Regularity» (Arjunamusic)

buy on iTunes | trailer on YouTube | album trailer on BandCamp | one track on SoundCloud

Henning Bolte comments:
It should be clear that Rohrer is not just imitating beat-driven forms of pop music or using it to embellish and pimp up jazz formats. He has developed his very own procedures and aesthetics to create a new form of captivating music that is consequently built from the deeper grounds of rhythm and drumming opening up truly new dimensions. The aesthetics is also found in the remarkable visual design of the album covers of his own Arjuna Music label. The music draws in listeners strongly, into an intense sound world all its own. What you hear will be unfamiliar, attractive, comforting, strange, disconcerting. It might remind the listener of the (re-) sounding world of our blood circulation. It is as mysterious and as fascinating as that.

Paweł Brodowski comments:
Famous Polish singer Anna Maria Jopek’s new album is a collection of haunting pre-WWII Polish tangos performed with a trio of Cuban piano icon Gonzalo Rubalcaba – a bridge between Polish, Cuban, Jewish, Argentinian and American cultures.

Chris Thile And Brad Mehldau «Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau» (Nonesuch)

Anna Filipieva comments:
The 2CD duo album by pianist Mehldau and singing mandolin player Thile contradicts the theory that one plus one equals two. Instead, it rather states than one plus one equals quite a lot, although ultimately exactly as much as needed to reach the universal harmony.

Art Ensemble Of Arkhangelsk feat Tim Dorofeev & Anatoly Vapirov «Live at Varna Summer 2016» (ArtBeat Music)

Anna Filipieva’s notes:
«This live recording was made during the concert set that the Soviet New Jazz legend, saxophonost Anatoly Vapirov, played with Art Ensemble from Arkhangelsk, Russia, led by guitarist Tim Dorofeyev, at the Varna Summer Jazz Festival in Bulgaria, which Vapirov was producing for more than two decades. The sound leaves much to be desired, as it happens with many live recordings, bt the music that was performed that night seemed very appealing to me.»

Victoria Kaunova – Ilya Morozov featuring Alex Sipiagin «The First!» (Butman Music)

Anna Filipieva’s notes: «This album, recorded by singer Victoria Kaunova and alto sax player Ilya Morozov, is an outstanding illustration of the idea that, if you want your straigh-ahead jazz to really and consistently boil, it is important to pour in fresh forces regularly… and not to conserve it, by all means!»

Andrzej Trzaskowski Quintet «Polish Jazz vol. 4 (1965)» (Polskie Nagrania/Warner Music Poland)

Paweł Brodowski’s notes: «Remastered and rereleased now on CD and vinyl “The Andrzej Trzaskowski Quintet” is considered one of the milestones of  Polish Jazz. Composer, arranger, pianist and bandleader was in his time a figure of equal importance as Krzysztof Komeda. This album, recorded one year before Komeda’s “Astigmatic” and featuring young trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, is an example of his visionary conception that expanded the frontiers of European jazz ».
