Henning Bolte comments:
It should be clear that Rohrer is not just imitating beat-driven forms of pop music or using it to embellish and pimp up jazz formats. He has developed his very own procedures and aesthetics to create a new form of captivating music that is consequently built from the deeper grounds of rhythm and drumming opening up truly new dimensions. The aesthetics is also found in the remarkable visual design of the album covers of his own Arjuna Music label. The music draws in listeners strongly, into an intense sound world all its own. What you hear will be unfamiliar, attractive, comforting, strange, disconcerting. It might remind the listener of the (re-) sounding world of our blood circulation. It is as mysterious and as fascinating as that.

Paweł Brodowski comments:
Recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France in June 2016, „December Avenue” is Tomasz Stanko’s 12th album released by ECM, and his second outing with the New York Quartet, following „Wislawa” (2012). The lineup includes David Virelles on piano and Gerlad Cleaver on drums, Reuben Rogers replaces Thomas Morgan on bass. The new CD, built mostly on ballads and displaying the trumpeter’s characteristic wistful sound, is permeated by pensive, dream-like mood.

Anna Filipieva comments:
The song titles sound rather technical, but they hide an abundance of colors, textures, and impressions from veteran composer Yuri Markin, the survivor of the Soviet jazz big band scene. Markin’s music from the 1970s and 80s, as performed currently by saxophonist Alexey Kruglov’s 20-piece Krugly Band (plus horn player Arkady Shilkloper as featured soloist,) rip apart the standard jazz forms from inside, as those forms are too narrow for it.

Matt Mitchell «Matt Mitchell plays Tim Berne: Førage» (Screwgun)

Release on July 2 | album trailer on BandCamp | Release details on the label’s website

Henning Bolte comments:
Listening to the pieces you could be torn between following the mountain stream and wanting to discern familiar elements, lines, shapes and architecture. The best approach is to abandon search for the familiar, and to immerse oneself as deeply as possible in the movements of the music first and finally getting satisfied by an apprehension of the gestalt that crystallizes in that kind of rewarding interaction. It is facilitated then by the clear articulation, flow and conclusiveness of the music.

Kuba Więcek Trio “Another Raindrop” is the newest addition to the revered series “Polish Jazz”. It is a debut release by the sensational 22-year old alto saxophonist with his trio including his favorite partners: Michał Barański on bass and Łukasz Żyta on drums. Inspired improvisations, great interplay. The album features almost exclusively the leader’s original compositions, except George Shearing’s “Conception”.

Patrik Sandberg comments:
Composer and basist Thundercat (born Stephen Bruner) teams up with Flying Lotus with a strong timeless album (23 tracks) that combines jazzfusion, electronica, soul, r&b and rock. Again as his previous albums the structures are loose and frenetic but with a clear direction and will attract all sort of listeners, the music gives substance with a kind injecting mindfulness that whets the appetite.

Famous Polish singer Anna Maria Jopek’s new album is a collection of haunting pre-WWII Polish tangos performed with a trio of Cuban piano icon Gonzalo Rubalcaba – a bridge between Polish, Cuban, Jewish, Argentinian and American cultures.

The 2CD duo album by pianist Mehldau and singing mandolin player Thile contradicts the theory that one plus one equals two. Instead, it rather states than one plus one equals quite a lot, although ultimately exactly as much as needed to reach the universal harmony.

Arsenal «Live in Tallinn’74» (ArtBeat Music)

Collectible vinyl LP + CD | NEW: Jazz.Ru Podcast with two tracks from the album, by Cyril Moshkow

Anna Filipieva comments:
This unique live recording of a 1974 performance was miraculously preserved in Tallinn, where saxophonist Alexey Kozlov played with his Moscow-based jazz-rock group Arsenal. This is a limited, collectible edition, but its significance as of a curious document from the Soviet jazz history cannot be underestimated.

The second outing on the Slovak label Hevhetia of the young Polish pianist and visionary composer Kamil Piotrowicz with his incredible sextet playing original music reminiscent somewhat of the ’60s avant garde scores of Krzysztof Komeda.

The sound leaves much to be desired, as it happens with many live recordings, bt the music that was performed that night seemed very appealing to me.»

Composer, arranger, pianist and bandleader was in his time a figure of equal importance as Krzysztof Komeda.
