Europe Jazz Media Chart, January 2018

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. Some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice. In October, 2017, the chart passed the 5th birthday of the initiative, as the inaugural chart was published in October, 2012; this is the 64th EJM Chart!

Mile Flynn comments:
The new album from brilliant pianist Elliot Galvin, which manages to combine angular indie rock guitars with imaginative modern piano trio jazz – it also has a great back story and set of influences – not least how technology controls our lives and Brexit! (He’s anti-Brexit by the way!).

Dmitry Ilugdin Trio «Reflection» (ArtBeat Music)

buy in iTunes | trailer on YouTube | buy in GooglePlay | listen in Yandex.Music

Anna Filipieva comments:
This is the second album recorded by Moscow-based pianist Dmitry Ilugdin as a leader, an honest jazz acoustic piano trio record with fiery drumming (Peter Ivshin) and rock-solid acoustic bass (Viktor Shestak,) but also with a twist of Russian classical music sensuality, European power jazz rhythmic ambivalence, and several very nice melodies to add to the pot.

Patrik Sandberg comments:
Bobo Stenson has long been a key person in the European jazz scene through his long-standing commitment with ECM Records since the first year of the label with his clear-edged lyrical piano playing.
He has been internationally successful with his long-standing own trio, since 2007 with Swedish bandmates, drummer Jon Fält and bass player Anders Jormin.
On the first trio disk since 2012:s Indicum, the trio continuous with its characteristic deep poetical, lyrical, sophisticated vocabulary with clear features of chamber, folk music and jazz.
The sound is characteristic, but the music still offers a strong organic, rhythmic and very dynamic feeling.

The solo performance by Zbigniew Seifert made for Radio Bremen on May 19, 1976. “Every musician who aspires to perform jazz on the violin professionally should listen to this recording,” said Dave Liebman in an interview for „Jazz Forum” magazine. „Solo Violin” is one of the Polish violin legend’s two CDS released recently by the Zbigniew Seifert Foundation, the other being the never before published „Variospheres – Live In Solothurn,” a concert recording made on January 18, 1976 by an international collective featuring Seifert, Michel Herr, Hans Hartmann and Janusz Stefanski.
