Europe Jazz Media Chart, September 2016

One of the earliest initiatives of EJM is the Europe Jazz Media Chart: a non-sales-related chart that reveals some of the hot new music surfacing across the globe right now. Some contributors also add their comments, explaining their choice.

Anna Filipieva notes: “Although the track titles are quite fun, Polish trumpet player Maciej Fortuna’s album sounds astoudingly goolmy. However, at times the play of these shades of gloom is full of beauty.”

Paweł Brodowski, Jazz Forum (Poland):

Zbigniew Namysłowski Quintet «Polish jazz – YES!» (Polskie Nagrania/Warner Music Poland)

album on the label’s website | album trailer on YouTube

Paweł Brodowski’s notes: “A long awaited new album by Poland’s legendary saxophonist Zbigniew Namysłowski is both a confirmation and manifesto. Yes, indeed, there is as Polish jazz with its distinctive flavor and Namysłowski is one of its originators and great proponents. „Polish jazz – YES!” is a striking new addition to the recently reactivated cult series “Polish Jazz” from the Polskie Nagrania catalogue, now owned by Warner Music Poland.
Eleven original compositions – based on folklike motifs, with complicated metrical structures but accessible melodies – feature inspired improvising by all members of the quintet. Released both on CD and vinyl as vol. 77 coinciding with Zbigniew’s 77th birthday.”
